Well, actually, 4.3.anything appears to be broken ... I've installed 5.2 on all of the following systems with no luck in getting X to work: AlphaStation 500au (unknown video - version 4.3 distributed with 5.2) AlphaStation 255/233 (S3 ViRGE/DX - version 4.3 distributed with 5.2) DS10 (Else Gloria Synergy - version 4.3.99.902) PC164LX (Matrox Millennium G200 - version 4.3.99.903) The DS10 is the handy one right now, so I'll report on it first. The symptom here is that the system totally and completely locks up on running startx. The XFree86.0.log file in /var/log gets created, but is completely empty. The monitor reports "no signal"; there is no network response or response to the keyboard. The patch reported in http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?c0ed03$13ha$1 has no effect on this. The PC164LX is a lot more interesting: after about 30 seconds, it *crashes* with a machine check: -------------------------------cut here--------------------------------------- Mounting root from ufs:/dev/da0a unexpected machine check: mces = 0x1 vector = 0x670 param = 0xfffffc0000006068 pc = 0x1604400ac ra = 0x12006d9f4 curproc = 0xfffffc0017734ba0 pid = 571, comm = XFree86 panic: machine check syncing disks, buffers remaining... 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 giving up on 616 buffers Uptime: 36m10s sym0: unknown interrupt(s) ignored, ISTAT=0x2a DSTAT=0x0 SIST=0x0 Automatic reboot in 15 seconds - press a key on the console to abort Rebooting... And the PC164LX actually writes stuff in the the XFree86 server log, which ends like this: -------------------------------cut here--------------------------------------- (--) MGA(0): Chipset: "mgag200 PCI" (**) Option "NoHal" (**) MGA(0): Matrox HAL module not loaded - using builtin mode setup instead (==) MGA(0): Depth 8, (==) framebuffer bpp 8 (==) MGA(0): Using AGP 1x mode (--) MGA(0): Linear framebuffer at 0x88000000 (--) MGA(0): MMIO registers at 0x82830000 (--) MGA(0): Pseudo-DMA transfer window at 0x82000000 (--) MGA(0): BIOS at 0x82820000 -------------------------------and here--------------------------------------- (I turned off loading the HAL module because it wasn't present, anyway). Does anyone have a 4.7/AXP install CD they'd like to sell me? XFree86 3.3.6 works fine on my 255/233 ... All of this is just FYI. I *desperately* need X to work on these boxes, but I don't know where to begin troubleshooting. If anyone can toss me a few clues, I can do debugging. Terry R. Friedrichsen trf@uplift.sunquest.com
