See also +BUILD_INFO and other metadata files in pkgsrc.
I couldn't find documentation but you can grab random binary package and 
inspect its contents.

It's a shame that pkgsrc is so often ignored here. It solves so many 
problems of ports and is so far ahead that any effort to improve ports 
will never match what is already available from pkgsrc.
