zool% grep CFLAGS make.conf
#CFLAGS= -O -pipe
# this instead of CFLAGS (which is not applicable to kernel builds anyway):

I have not set CPUTYPE.

The system was updated per the instructions in UPDATING.  The steps 
were done exactly as stated in the updating section.  However, I have 
rebooted 3=4 times since then in order to get the console logging 
working.
