I isolated the offending call, but have yet to find a working solution. For now, I'm recommending users to create an /etc/malloc.conf as prescribed in malloc(3) with the "aj" flags. The other workaround is to downgrade to AbiWord 1.1.3. Anyone interested can track this bug using the URL below.
