Thanks to all who have responded thus far. I still don't think we have an explanation as to what is happening. In my mind, the following is evidence against a getty conflict. 1. the problem is delayed if rc.local is put to sleep. During that time I can alt-ctrl-f1 to ttyv1. I can stay there all day if I want with no probs., so it doesn't seem that the X server is trying to grab it. However, as soon as I switch back to ttyv3, the keyboard is locked. 2. If I abandon the rc script method of starting xdm and instead declare ttyv3 "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure I still get the problem. In that case, I don't see how getty could cause a conflict. I'm really clueless here!
