Your friends are running FreeBSD or Windows?. I have a couple of CDs
that appear empty under FreeBSD (I usually get an error from pwd(1) as
well IIRC) but can be read under Win. AFAIK this is either because
they use the Joliet(sp?) filesystem or the don't have Rock Ridge
extensions, perhaps someone can confirm (or deny) this.
