I found setting up kdm to be very easy. Use it just as you would xdm or gdm. If you're using ttys, then change the line that starts xdm to one that starts kdm. The FAQ has a section on this. As for configuring kdm itself, you need to do that as root. Run the program kconfig, and choose the login manager to configure.
