the firmware kernel module is needed, yes.
All modern GPUs load firmware using the FreeBSD infrastructure for managing
firmware modules.  This is true regardless of using any of the new drm-*-km=
od
versions, drm-legacy-kmod, or the old drm kmod modules in base.

This might be why you got software rendering earlier, because it failed to =
load
even the old modules in base, but I don't know.
