Your rights vary depending upon the license you choose, but you certainly do NOT lose your copyright. If you are the author of a piece of software and you release the code to public domain, you still have the right to sell the same code under a different license as well. So, if Microsoft decides they want your software without the existing license (public domain) you can relicense it to them for a fee under whatever terms you want, and they must deal with you on it because of the copyright that you hold.
