The internal controller only has 2 ports, one of which is the system disk (not in RAID). I've made 5 file-backed devices with mdconfig (with files on the system disk) and united them into a RAIDZ to rule out the controller. ZFS seems to run fine using this configuration (the resulting device is smaller, of course), e.g. it's still grinding its buildworlds OK. For testing, I set up the original disks into a GEOM stripe and newfs'd it into UFS2. This configuration also seems to be working fine, so the controller and drives are OK also! Am I stupid or what?
