Ok.  Figured it out :)

I just installed smartmontools.  Immediately, the timeouts started.  

Looks like smartd querying the two disks on ahci1 was causing command timeouts. 

I'll do some more investigation and take this up with the smartmontools
project, but at this point it seems ahci isn't my problem.

I'll duck out of this bug now!
