I posted a message about this to both freebsd-java and freebsd-stable, and I've received private mail from some folks saying they've experienced the same problem, but I've seen nothing on either of the lists. A little digging with truss leads me to believe it's a problem with the linux layer, specifically the linux_sched_getscheduler call. Which works for root, but returns an illegal operation for users. I have no idea how to fix it; it was pushing my experience to use truss. - a.
