Does your BIOS allow you to set the parameters used for the disk, ie can you hardwire it to a specific PIO mode ?? if so I'd check what the BIOS sets it to as default, and step that back one notch, then see if the problem persists. Maybe you already stated that, but what chipset does your machine(s) have ??
