And it appears that the fault was following the handbook -- the 
documentation appears to be out of date and references a set of LDAP 
packages that have been superceded by nss-pam-ldapd.

If someone would like me to write some LDAP join documentation for 
inclusion, please get in touch and I'd be happy to do so.
