My Gateway solo-5100 does the same thing.  But in my case I chose this mode by a bios
configuration parameter.  The bios has a setting that lets you "expand" text mode.  I
turn it on and I have a full screen of 80x25 character.  I didn't like the character
rendering in expanded mode, so I turned it off.  Now I have a
little screen of well defined characters.

X works just fine with the full 1024x768 res.
