Yep, that's true! I disabled journaling with tunefs

I also came across Warren's site on backing up systems:
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/docs/html/backup.html

So because freebsd now puts everything under /, it is more ideal to
use something like dump or are you in the same boat and it requires
separate partitions?
