I think umass is used more often with tape backup devices, and uhci is used
with things like, in my case, a USB Logitech cordless wheel mouse.

I wasn't aware there is a FreeBSD 7.7-RELEASE!  :-)

Is the drive external?  Does your /etc/fstab have anything to mount it
automatically?  Is there bootable media in the drive at startup?
