Can you try two things for me? Copy factory-gdm.conf to gdm.conf. IF that doesn't work, set your locale to C, and see if that helps. Also, make sure you're not running gdm out of /etc/ttys. Yeah, galeon needs some patches to come up to Mozilla 1.2.1. Basically, you'll want to modify the Makefile, and change the default MOZ_CONFIGURE_ARGS to --with-mozilla-snapshot="1.2". The devel MOZ_CONFIGURE_ARGS should be changed to trunk.
