Do a make for the shell you want to hack in, and the sources will be fetched from some site. Wait until it has been unpacked and patches are applied. When it starts to compile, just hit CTRL+C. Now the patched source code for the shell of your choice is in the directory work/name_of_shell_and_version/. Now it's just for you to find the right file, where the source code is, and start to do what you want to do.
