So I cheated : the DAC is described in my XF86config as an "att20c498" which is supported with the S3 chips. I usually first start this computer under Lo$e3.11 to setup correctly the values in the internal registers of the '490 (1024x768). Then I warm-reboot under FreeBSD / XFree86 and i get a good display.
