If you have a bad enough situation, then sometimes the best way
to start fixing it is by just ripping out what's there...

But if I remember right, Poul was talking about work that would
be started in the 6.x-branch.  There should be plenty of time
before 6.x is the branch that anyone would *need* to use in
production, and presumably the new improved versions would be
in place before that time.
