My 3Com 3C589C card also needs to be powered down, if I dualboot my laptop
from Windows to BSD, and dont remove the card in between, the card wont
work.

I found out, that it when I shutdown my Windows, the 3Com card keeps the
network link, then BSD cannot initialize the card.
