I had to boot off the floppy and fix it manually. - To my surprise, the sysinstall partitioning phase did not find the old NetBSD partitions on the disk. The reason I find this surprising is that when I got the mfsroot floppy wrong, the FreeBSD kernel happily found and booted using the NetBSD partitions. So apparently sysinstall and the kernel don't quite look in the same places for the disk label. - The sysinstall screen still gets the colors wrong.
