Hi,
Thanks for the link.  The system I am using is an
overclocked
Celeron 300 running at 450.  I slowed it down to
normal speed and GENERIC
compiled just as it should.  I would have tried this
earlier, if I had not had flawless kernel builds on
this machine in the past.  I appreciate you taking the
time to send me the link.
