In my experience this may happen if zpool.cache has old / obsolete pool
records.
Normally, zpool command would not crash in such a case, but it seems to hap=
pen
when zpool.cache is on a read-only filesystem which is the case during the =
boot
because rc.d/zpool is run before rc.d/root.
