There is actually no 'snd0' device (so don't ask me why that's what
you give MAKEDEV as an argument).

What are you trying to do with the cat(1)? If you have an .au file
laying around, try,
$ cat sound.au > /dev/audio
And see what happens. If you have some .wav files,
$ cat sound.wav > /dev/dsp
I think.
