Make depend doesn't (shouldn't) affect the size of the kernel.  It sounds
like you installed a unstripped debugging kernel.
This is on my -CURRENT system:
-r-xr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  2072194 Aug  9 19:23 /kernel*
-r-xr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  7780317 Aug  9 19:23 /kernel.debug*
