Well,
1) hosts.equiv doesn't matter, only hosts (or the nameserver)
2) maybe you have mistyped the names in the original files, as you mistyped
it in this letter:

3) Of course, this line is on mshow?ell's /etc/exports, isn't it?
(and not in some other file)

4) Can you reach mrhow?ell, eg. ping?
