Sell the modems to raise some more cash.  Use the cash to invest in a pair
of 2-wire line drivers.  Dial modems generally won't talk to each other
without line power.

Make sure you go for drivers with RS-232 _async_ interfaces.  Then run SLIP
or PPP over the link.
