There's no such thing as a "PERC 3". You probably have a 3/Di with one
of the eleven dozen random PCI IDs that Dell keeps adding to these
machines.
Try a 4.3-STABLE boot floppy; I keep adding them as fast as people tell
me about them.

No; the drivers for both the AMI and Adaptec "PERC 3*" controller families
are already on the disk.

It's very rarely necessary; and these days, all you do is mount the
floppy, delete /kernel.gz and replace it with your own kernel. If the
driver you want isn't already in the kernel, you don't even have to do
that; just put the .ko file on another floppy and use "load <modulename>".
