FWIW, I'm using an "Xstreama" 28K modem (the cheapest I could find 8) and it
works fine.  I'm also using an Accton 2216 "NE2000" compatible ethernet
card, but this required some changes to the 'ed' driver.  

Nate, what happened to the patches for this that I sent you and Soren for
review?  I never heard anything back on that.  It would be nice to have
them in the tree soon so that I could re-world my notebook...

I get 600-800K/sec out of the 2216, so I guess it counts as a 'known
performer' too. 8)
