What does this have to do with FreeBSD?

Use 'ssh -v -v -v' to trace what's going on.

Taking an educated guess, identity.pub is a RSA1 key, which only works
with SSHv1.  Unless you're using a truely ancient version of ssh, it's
going to prefer using SSHv2, which means that you should setup RSA or
DSA identity keys.
