Check out the build for "Build for FreeBSD/x86" under the HowTos tree on the left hand side. I followed these instructions (last week) to the letter and had no problems. That was my first ever experance of BSD and UNIX. Can't be bad. The main thing is to install all the listed ports installed, OpenMotif development environment 2.1.30 (/usr/ports/x11-toolkits/open-motif-devel/) GNU make 3.79.1 (/usr/ports/devel/gmake/) GNU m4 1.4 (/usr/ports/devel/m4/) dgs 0.5.9 (/usr/ports/x11/dgs/) unixODBC 1.8.8 (/usr/ports/databases/unixODBC/) JDK 1.1.8 (/usr/ports/java/jdk/) Swing 1.1.1 (/usr/ports/java/jfc/) Linux JDK 1.2.2 (/usr/ports/java/linux-jdk/) Zip 2.3 (/usr/ports/archivers/zip/) At a guess, you probably won't be able to run the linux vm without first enabling linux support.
