You're right, further checking revealed that the devel/p5-ExtUtils-ParseXS port (v 3.24) was the problem. pkg delete devel/p5-ExtUtils-ParseXS fixed that, and I'm now using the version (v 3.34) with perl5.26 and Params::Classify installs as expected, now.
