I think Doug is planning on supporting inb/outb in FreeBSD/Alpha in the same way that Linux/Alpha does, by hacking the bus info into the top bits of the port address. I can understand why they did this (they get working X servers for free) and I can understand why NetBSD doesn't want to do this (it's a hack). I think the opportunity to get working X servers for those starved Alpha owners is worth the hack.
