That might mean that it's hung in the kernel for some reason. One well-known old way that can happen is in NFS, when an NFS server that's in use goes away. Is your home directory, or anything Firefox uses, on an NFS server? You could use ps, and maybe other similar tools, to find out the state of the process or thread, maybe what it's waiting for.
