Does this sound reasonable for you? This program did actually what I suggested to be done manually. It all is a dangerous thing if you are not able to save at least the crucial sectors via dd. Gpart actually shows you at the least the starting sectors (blocks) of each partition. If you would save at least always some MB starting there, you will have a chance later to fix things in case of.
