First a little background... My computer is a Pentium 75 with 1G WD HD (c:), 420M Conner HD (d:), Reveal CDROM, soundcard, 1.44 FD, VGA. I downloaded the files from 2.1.5-Release/bin, XF86312, and des directories, and also the boot.flp (that's all I need to get started right?). I was able to get to the installation menu from the floppy and start the process. I want to put FreeBSD on the Conner and chose default options for the whole disk, average user. When it began the installation process it got to the point where it started copying the /bin files from c:. (c:\freebsd\bin, c:\freebsd\des, etc.) It seems to copy a little bit (1%) then gives: Write failure on transfer! (wrote -1 bytes of 1024 bytes) Unable to transfer the bin distribution from wd0s1 It also gives similar messages for des, etc. Thinking that there might somehow be a conflict with the CDROM and one of the drives (it's daisy chained to the Conner), I unhooked it. Then the installation process got up to 3% on copying the /bin before the same error messages. So now I'm wondering if the problem is due to the 1G western digital. It's 2100C 16 63, but is setup in BIOS as 525 64 63 LBA (pfdisk says 524 64 63). The installation disk startup shows 2100 16 63, but in the menus its 525 64 63. Before I go messing with the drive settings in BIOS, which has caused lost data before, I'd like to see what you think. Thanks in advance, Gerard Giamberdine gerard@holly.colostate.edu
