As I have no synaptics hardware, I cannot say which may be t= he better option. The use of evdev should probably be an option unless the non-evdev path can be chosen at runtime. If you could test all possibilities (input-synaptics as-is, input-synaptics with evdev patch, input-evdev, etc) and share your results, that would be m= ost helpful.
