When using the esd-output plugin there are no more cracklings. The plugin never worked for me before (xmms hanged when selecting it or sound was played at x2 speed). After reading your mail I gave it another try and recompiled esound AND xmms from the ports. Now it works. There is only one thing which __could__ have something to do with the fact that it didn't work before and works now: I removed the linuxthreads port because after the recent changes xmms wouldn't compile with linuxthreads installed.
