The transition build should be performed without BINFORMAT, OBJFORMAT or /etc/objformat being set. I assumed that if you had done previous builds with BINFORMAT set to elf, then you must have been running elf, otherwise you would get wierd build errors. FWIW, I tested the upgrade starting with a clean 2.2.5/6/7 or current system. By clean, I mean no changes to /etc/make.conf from what was distributed in each release.
