Robert,

the issue is still happening.
Now the system has the following config:
OS - i386 stable/7 r191214
X - xf86-video-ati-6.12.2 xorg-server-1.6.0,1
HW - from dmesg:
agp0: <Intel 82443BX (440 BX) host to PCI bridge> on hostb0
drm0: <ATI Radeon RV280 9250> on vgapci0
vgapci0: child drm0 requested pci_enable_busmaster
info: [drm] AGP at 0xe8000000 64MB
info: [drm] Initialized radeon 1.29.0 20080528
info: [drm] Setting GART location based on new memory map
info: [drm] Loading R200 Microcode
info: [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs
drm0: [ITHREAD]
from Xorg.log:
RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon 9250 5960 (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x5960)

Maybe I didn't mention this before - this a rather old system that tracked
stable/7 from before 7.1 times, and also tracked ports for quite a while. So it is
almost one year old, but this problem started happening somewhere in March of this
year. So the cause is in something recent, either in our drivers or in xorg code.
The hardware as can be seen is also quite aged.

Today this happened again, I mean the symptoms were the same: completely hanged X,
no screen updates, no keyboard handling, but mouse cursor can still be slowly moved.
