Well, tried the patch provided. It still doesn't work, but it changed
the symptoms a bit. Now, rather than the panic, I get (note: the first
line might be bogus... my notes aren't perfect):

Programming 34 pins on IOAPIC #0:
IOAPIC #0 intpin 24 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 25 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 26 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 27 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 28 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 29 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 30 -> irq -1
IOAPIC #0 intpin 31 -> irq -1

Then the machine hangs.
