Found work-around:  Had been us= ing 'Guided' mode and trying to use the entire disk, but decided = to use a partition this go-round.  Created a DOS partition, and&n= bsp;then a freeBSD partition and edited it manually.  Finished the ins= tallation, removed the CDROM, re-booted, and freeBSD/amd64 came up just as = pretty as you please.  Must be something peculiar about the hardw= are configuration on the amd64 system; I don't know.  I had no trouble= at all installing freeBSD/i386 on another computer.
