I'm trying to get a sound from my laptop. I can see the actual card in dmesg,
but no audio framework driver (no pcm).

hardware: i386 armada 1700 laptop
sound: ESS 1869 16-bit Plug and Play (PnP)
OS: FBSD 6.3-prerelease

I checked that the sound is working using Compaq PC diagnostics floppy.

I added

	device          sound
	device          snd_sbc
	device          snd_sb16

to the kernel configuration file and

	hint.pcm.0.at="isa"
	hint.pcm.0.port="0x220"
	hint.pcm.0.irq="5"
	hint.pcm.0.drq="1"
	hint.pcm.0.flags="0x0"

to /boot/device.hints. The port was set up using Compaq Setup for Portables
floppy.

I can see the card in dmesg as sbc0:

unknown: <PNP0401> can't assign resources (port)
unknown: <PNP0501> can't assign resources (port)
unknown: <PNP0700> can't assign resources (port)
sbc0: <ESS ES1869 (Compaq OEM)> at port 0x230-0x23f,0x388-0x38b,0x300-0x301 irq
5 drq 0,1 on isa0
sbc0: [GIANT-LOCKED]
unknown: <PNP0303> can't assign resources (port)
unknown: <PNP0f13> can't assign resources (irq)
unknown: <PNP0c02> can't assign resources (memory)

but I cannot see pcm, and /dev/sndstat is empty:

# cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
Installed devices:
#

What am I missing?
Are the "unknown" messages relevant?

many thanks
anton
