Boy, am I glad you mentioned this! :)

You might want to avoid some of the work I did a while ago.
I never got around too committing it, but it's online now,
for everyone to review or continue it:

http://people.freebsd.org/~keramida/files/console-server.tgz

I haven't kept this up to date in a while, but it will give you a good
head start while you're at it.
