keep the fingers crossed... i don't know if it would be much help, but i
figured i might try rebooting after i ran fsck again.  i was able to build
the device nodes and mount the partition... and wait wait... what's
happening... 

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is so very sweet.  this system was offline for the longest time
because i couldn't figure this out.  with your help, you guys got me
getting this up and running within a few hours. :)  now if ya'll ain't
amazing, i dunno what is. :)

very nice.  now i'll recover what i need to recover, and then i figure a
reinstall is a good idea to get some practice in. ;)

this was a bit of good news in a aweful day.  much gratitude to all of you
for your assitance on this one. :)
