If you don't need to edit movie, you can just use dd to dump the whole DVD into ("image") file (the only tricky part for me here was: not to forget to add "bs=2048" on dd command line), then use growisofs to burn that image onto blank DVD. When I needed to edit/convert to DVD acceptable format movies, tweak aspect ratio etc, I used ffmpeg. On rare occasion I used mencoder (which comes with mplayer). I hope, this helps.
