Further update for the archives:

FreeBSD 6.1-BETA4 is quite happy to do PXE booting and installation,  
and boots from the hard drive (dmesg attached).  Sadly, even with the  
most recent BIOS (v. 1.09), booting from CD fails with the BTX halt.

With that said, that's perfectly adequate for my purposes.  Now, to  
burn it in and try it out....
