I agree with Ted, I set up a fbsd box at work for web page
developement, then later configured sendmail for an outbound
mail server. It was quite easy, plenty of docs on the web.
The reason for not doing inbound is the company already covered
and didn't want to register the pop address. I needed the 
seperate oubound smtp for a specific purpose machine that
could not access our other mail server.
Sendmail is not as scary as many people may lead you to believe.
